About

Caring Together North Yorkshire offers services across Ryedale and Whitby areas, whose goal is to build a community where unpaid carers and individuals living alone are supported, included and recognised.

A short history

The need for greater support for carers was identified by Ryedale Voluntary Action, which set up a pilot project in 1991. The success of this work gave rise to the establishment of a registered charity, Ryedale Carers Support, in 1999.

Ryedale Carers Support was set up to provide practical and emotional support for carers, for the people they care for and for older people living on their own. Initially this support involved a sitting service provided by volunteers, in order to give carers a break. To this service was added a number of social groups, including Songs for Scones and Farmers’ Breakfast. This work was funded by the then North Yorkshire County Council supplemented by grants from local and national charitable funds.

In 2015 the charity was instrumental in establishing a partnership with Caring Together Whitby and Support for Carers Scarborough, to deliver support across a wider geographical area. In 2025, Caring Together Whitby decided to wind up as a charity and asked Ryedale Carers Support to deliver its services in and around the town. This was undertaken successfully and in the following year our name changed to Caring Together North Yorkshire to reflect this new area.
