Spring Is Finally Showing Up…
… (and So Are My Chickens)
You know that moment when you step outside and think, hang on… something’s different today? That’s exactly how spring arrived this year on exactly the 1st March. I want to say not with a grand announcement, just a gentle shift, but where I am it was a sudden shift — the air felt a bit softer, the light a bit kinder, and suddenly the world didn’t look quite so grey anymore.
And honestly, it couldn’t have come at a better time, because I’ve finally got some new chickens to add to my dwindling flock of just 4. I couldn’t face introducing 3 newbies, separating them by day and putting them to bed at night in the wind, rain and snow, but today I did! They’re still young, still figuring out the whole “being a chicken” thing, and it’s early days in the establishment of the inevitable pecking order, but it feels good to have a flock of … seven!
Watching chickens potter around is weirdly calming. Watching them mooch about each day in their own little gang, searching for grubs, and following me in the hope of a ginger biscuit or two, never ceases to make me smile! They make me slow down, breathe a bit, and just enjoy the small stuff. Spring always feels like a fresh start, but this year it feels extra personal. Between the longer days, the first hints of green, and these little feathered comedians in the yard, it’s like life is gently nudging me forward. Nothing dramatic — just a quiet reminder that things grow, things change, and sometimes joy shows up in the form of a chicken trying to outrun her pals to get the remaining crumbs from my table!
Easter on the Horizon and Good Wishes All Around
With spring settling in, my mind naturally drifts toward Easter. It’s one of those times of year that carries its own kind of warmth, no matter how you celebrate it. For some people it’s faith, for others it’s family, and for plenty it’s simply an excuse to enjoy a bit of colour, a bit of chocolate, and a bit of hope.
For me, it’s a mix of everything. I love the feeling of it — the sense that brighter days are coming, that the world is waking up again, that we’re all allowed to feel a little lighter. Even the chickens seem to fit into the theme, like they arrived right on cue to remind me that new beginnings don’t have to be big or complicated. Sometimes they’re fluffy and slightly chaotic.
It’s been a long stretch of winter — literally and figuratively — and I think most people could use a bit of sunshine, a bit of laughter, and something small to look forward to. Spring has this lovely way of whispering, “Go on, let’s start again.”
The Importance of Looking Out for Each Other
All this talk of spring and Easter and chickens settling into their little routines has had me thinking about something else too: how much we all need each other. Winter has a way of making people retreat into their own corners — physically, emotionally, sometimes both — and by the time spring rolls around, you realise just how long it’s been since you properly connected with anyone outside your usual bubble.
There’s something really uplifting about meeting together, even in the simplest ways. A cup of tea with a friend, a chat over the fence with a neighbour, a quick catch‑up that turns into a laugh you didn’t know you needed. Those little moments stitch us back together after the long, cold months. They remind us that we’re not meant to do everything alone.
Friendships, connections, support — they’re not grand gestures most of the time. They’re the everyday things: someone remembering to check in, someone sharing a story that makes you smile, someone showing up when you didn’t even ask. And just like spring, those moments arrive quietly but make everything feel lighter.
Maybe that’s why this season feels so hopeful. It nudges us back toward each other. It encourages us to open the door, step outside, and reconnect — with nature, with our routines, and with the people who make life feel a bit more colourful. Even the chickens seem to understand the value of sticking together, moving as a little flock, keeping an eye on one another. There’s a lesson in that, I think.
So as Easter approaches and the days grow brighter, I’m hoping for more of those small but meaningful connections — for myself and for everyone else. A bit more warmth, a bit more togetherness, and the reminder that we’re all better when we look out for each other.
